Assisted Bed Bath
Procedure
- Assess how much the patient can safely do alone and agree the plan with them.
- Screen the bed, ensure warmth and privacy, and place the call bell within reach.
- Bring warm water, soap, flannels and towels to a height the patient can reach.
- Let the patient wash the face, chest, arms and abdomen themselves.
- Assist with the back, feet and any area they cannot reach comfortably.
- Observe the skin, pressure areas and joints as you assist, without taking over.
- Encourage the patient to wash their own perineum; assist only if they cannot.
- Support them to dry, apply lotion and dress in clean clothing.
- Tidy the unit, wash hands and record the level of assistance needed and any change from yesterday.
