The first 3 steps

  1. Confirm indication, patient identity and any allergy to chlorhexidine, iodine or plaster.
  2. Wash hands and assemble: cannula, tourniquet, alcohol swab, extension set, flush, dressing, sharps bin.
  3. Apply the tourniquet 10–15 cm above the intended site.
