Oxygen Administration by Mask

Procedure

  1. Check the prescription including target saturation range.
  2. Assess baseline respiratory rate, effort, SpO2 and colour.
  3. Select the correct device for the required concentration.
  4. Check the cylinder or wall supply and the water level in the humidifier.
  5. Set the flow rate before applying the device to the patient.
  6. Fit the mask so it seals without pressing on the eyes or bridge of the nose.
  7. Confirm the reservoir bag stays inflated if using a non-rebreathe mask.
  8. Reassess SpO2 after five minutes and titrate to the target range.
  9. Check pressure points hourly and offer regular mouth care.
  10. Document device, flow rate, saturation and patient response.
